The Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis, “Little Book of the Medicinal Herbs of the Indians”, also known as the Codex Badiano, is the earliest known medical manuscript of the Americas, compiled in 1552. It preserves the sacred plant-based healing knowledge of the Nahua-speaking peoples of Central Mexico—especially those from the ancestral heartland of Anahuac.
Anahuac refers to the central highland basin surrounding Lake Texcoco—modern-day Mexico City and its valleys—once home to many interconnected Indigenous nations, including the Mexica (Aztecs), Tepaneca, Acolhua, and others. Though the Mexica would rise to dominate the region, they were just one of many groups who shared the Nahuatl language, cosmology, and healing traditions.
In the Indigenous animistic cosmology of Anahuac, medicine was not chemical—it was a tripartite energetic process. Healing meant restoring balance between body, spirit, and the sacred forces of the universe. The Codex Badiano, dictated in Nahuatl by the Indigenous physician Martín de la Cruz and translated into Latin by Juan Badiano, is no ordinary book—it is a spirit-being, a Ticitl Ancestor (“Healer” or “doctor”) in codex form, encoded with over 250 sacred plants used in Anahuac healing practices—treating everything from toothaches, poison bites, cardiopulmonary conditions, and leprosy-like symptoms to spirit possession, the Evil Eye, and Wind Illness.

After its creation in 1552, the Codex Badiano was taken to Spain and eventually deposited in the Vatican Library, where it nearly perished—misfiled and forgotten for nearly 400 years. It resurfaced in 1929, when Mexican scholar Francisco Guerra identified it and brought it to scholarly attention. Decades later, it was translated and republished in Spanish, marking its return as a vital link to Nahua science and spirit. That it survived colonial Catholic erasure, institutional silence, and global upheaval is nothing short of miraculous—a fragile codex that still carries the living breath of Indigenous Nahua medicine across five centuries.

About the Author
Created by author, historian, and entertainment media professional Stacy James, this work is part of a broader sacred transmission—a multi-decade mission to restore the animistic sciences and technologies of ancient Mesoamerica.
